Traditionally, engineering institutions are conservative and reluctant in appointing young leadership. However, looking at the declining interest in engineering education across India, progressive institutions are considering young academic with dynamic personality and global outlook.

EduShine assisted one of the leading engineering focused university in searching Director – School of Engineering.

The Institution

The institution is one of the oldest private universities of India.

The university has more than 8000 students on campus and it is focused on Engineering & Technology courses at UG and PG level. The university is positioned as a premier institution, benchmarked against global academic standards. The engineering school has 3000+ students studying across UG and PG courses in various subjects.

Recently,due to transfer of management control and change at academic leadership the university is going through transformation process. It is professionally managed institution with dynamic work culture and academic rigour.

Search Objective

The university is going through transformation process, from being a traditional academic driven university to dynamic globally competitive university. To meet this institutional goal, the university aspired to appoint a young, dynamic academic leader with proven track record in large institution.

Director – School of Engineering is one of the most important position from the university point of view.

The objective was to hire Director – School of Engineering, who can rejuvenate traditional institution and bring balance between academic rigour and student learning experience.

Search Strategy

The university is a large engineering focused university with 3000+ students in school of engineering. The university board wanted young and dynamic academic leader with proven track record. However, EduShine provided the pragmatic view of the Indian education ecosystem and available talent. Based on discussions, university board and EduShine agreed upon securing high potential academic leader who worked under mentorship of exceptional academic leader in a large quality focused academic setup.

 

EduShine mapped 26 universities / engineering institutions meeting with these criteria and prepared a long list of 11 candidates. After internal evaluation, EduShine recommended 5 shortlisted candidates to the university board.

The Outcome

The university board met with all the 5 candidates recommended by EduShine. After rigorous selection process, consisting of 6 rounds, the university board selected 2 candidates and extended the offer to the first choice candidate.

Unfortunately, due to mismatch in candidate expectations and university’s standard compensation, the university was not able to offer the compensation expected by the candidate. EduShine assisted the university in compensation negotiation with the first choice candidate on one hand and kept the secondary choice candidate engaged. In spite of all the efforts from the university board and EduShine, the first choice candidate declined the offer.

As the search was time sensitive, immediately after offer decline by the first candidate, EduShine initiated compensation discussion with second choice candidate and university board made him the offer. Finally, the candidate joined the university during the second week of April.

The newly appointed Director – School of Engineering is MTech & PhD from IIT Delhi with 5 years of industry experience and more than 15 years of experience in academia, consisting 7 years of academic administration in engineering focused premier university. He also has teaching experience in Europe and Singapore.

EduShine assisted the university in its global strategy to build engaged corporate relations by searching Asia Head Corporate Relations.

The Institution

The client institution is a globally ranked Australian University. The university is a young university and has been consistently ranked among top 50 universities in the world with less than 50 years of age.

The university has more than 50000 students and 4000+ staff at 4 campuses in Australia. The university is known for it’s cultural diversity with students coming from more than 120 countries.

The university has long standing relationship with Asian countries.

Search Objective

The objective of conducting the search for Asia Head – Corporate Engagements is to identify dynamic professional who can build engaged relationship with the large corporate houses and non-government organisations.

The position is focused on supporting university graduates and helping current students connect with internship and employment opportunities in South Asia (Indian Sub-continent), South East Asia and Middle East. The role also includes generation of new employment opportunities for the university alumni.

The position works as an evangelist for career opportunities in the region.

The position has dual reporting, functional reporting to Head – Corporate Engagements at Australia & operational reporting to Director – South Asia.

Search Strategy

Being the first position for corporate engagement function by globally ranked university, this was a challenging assignment.

Challenges in this search assignment:
– Geographical spread of the position
– Lack of clarity about the future prospects of the position

EduShine to focus on the context of the position and started mapping of educational institutions and HR services firms. We identified 30 target organisations having premium service / product and global customer base. These organisations included educational institutions, HR consulting firms, job portals, leadership training firms and assessment firms. We created long list of about 40 candidates and initiated a conversation to understand their interest for the position. Based on candidate interest level and EduShine’s rigorous assessment, 7 candidates are shortlist for initiating selection process by the client university.

The university selection process was of 6 rounds of interview meetings and leadership assessment test. EduShine conducted detailed reference check and also assisted university in compensation negotiation.

The Outcome

The selected candidate is having global qualifications and more than 15 years of experience in corporate relations and business development for HR consulting services and educational institution. In the recent employment, the candidate was associated with Asia regional campus of globally ranked university. She has the maturity, knowledge and personality to represent top ranked university to the CxOs of large corporate houses.

The Institution

A globally benchmarked institution, operating at the intersection of education, research & industry consulting, was looking out for an academic profile with exceptional credentials to join them as a Dean-Consulting. The founders of this institute have decades of global experience in the sector along with Phds from top global universities (Carnegie Mellon, UPenn, SUNY Buffalo, UT Al-paso etc.) and have been  building products and providing cutting-edge solutions to clients. One of the program from this institution is ranked at number #3 (#2 among academic institutions) in the world by CIO.com for “Big Data Certifications That Pay Off”. The establishment is in parallel flanked by Columbia University and Stanford University in this list.

Having built an intense reputation at such a nascent stage, the institution was keen to uphold this carefully curated industry repertoire. The founders were very specific that they only wanted a candidate that had global exposure and an extensive academic record.

Today, big-data and analytics is a driving force behind economic growth. However, there are only handful of professionals who have the vision and the relevant experience in this field. Because the industry continues to remain niche, finding full-time academic faculty in this area is a herculean task. To make matters more complicated, the industry salaries for such professionals are exorbitant. Thus, discovering a technically suitable candidate who would want to pursue an academic career and make the offer convincing for them, within budgetary constraints of education institution was the biggest challenge.

All of 58 years, the candidate was already at the epitome of his corporate career. He had over 20 years’ hands on experience in providing data driven analytic solutions to improve business performance. He also displayed exceptional ability in providing strategic inputs to improve ROI/profitability of marketing programs in his previous corporate role and was immensely well regarded and sought after in the industry. The institute selected the said candidate as Dean – Consulting, due to his extensive professional experience and impeccable academic qualification, which included a Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The effort vastly improved the company’s planning and execution functions, they knew that in order to succeed in this era of technology their accounting systems needed to be much more robust than what they are. They turned to WP consulting to improve their accounting systems.

The biggest challenge was that Arguzo was not utilizing technology properly. Too much of the work was still being recorded manually, which meant that the numbers took a long time to note down and then to be analyzed. Live data was also not available and decisions can only be made after all the required data and been received. This was holding Arguzo back; they knew they could corner more of the market if they had the ability to be more mobile. The work addressed three critical issues for Pharm Ltd.:

  • Improve sales and operations and production planning:

    The teams focused their efforts on a few of the highest-value S&OP levers in order to review the current planning process, identify gaps in the planning infrastructure and analytically understand demand and supply variability.

  • Determine the right inventory level:

    With hundreds of medications in the market, Pharm Ltd. needed a proper method to predict and manage their inventory. Using a mean absolute percentage analysis (MAPE), the teams defined appropriate levels for raw materials and finished products by mapping actual versus forecasted sales on the most important SKUs.

  • Optimize the supply chain for perfect order planning:

    The diagnostic determined the stressors that affected sales and service levels. The teams focused on resolving issues related to higher-than-normal back-orders and lead times, which stressed the entire supply chain and led to delays in medications reaching consumers.

The solution WP consulting came up with combined cutting edge technology with real world practicality. Everyone knew that the systems had to be updated, the real challenge was updating them without disrupting the whole organization in a negative way. The solution was to introduce proper workload management done through computers, while providing mobile platforms to the stakeholders.

This allowed the workers to be involved in the job instead of feeling like they had been made redundant by technology.

Arguzo employees are now more empowered; Arguzo also has the benefit of generating reports instantaneously whenever needed. They can now make decisions on the fly based on the latest real time data.

The effort vastly improved the company’s planning and execution functions, created and implemented a new stock policy that accounted for specific SKUs and key variables, streamlined the order preparation process and reduced distribution transport times.
